At first, I was mad at Sol. Well, only a little. I did say I wanted someone to talk to, but a fae prince and princess? Seriously? Of all the mated pairs in the world, this is who he asks to visit me.

After introductions are officially made, Raven says, “I want you to come with me. I think we need a break from the testosterone and egos.”

“Yours, too?” I ask.

She smirks. “You have no idea.”

We make our way upstairs to the bedroom I’ve been using. Inside, Raven closes the door. She removes a bracelet from her wrist and flicks it into the air. The bracelet expands and a portal opens, but it’s veiled in silver. I can’t see on the other side. If Sol wouldn’t have invited them here personally, no way would I go—but he did—and that must mean he trusts them.

“If you try to kill me,” I begin, “I’ll rip you apart.”

“I have no doubt you’ll try, but you won’t succeed. You’re not mated to Solomon yet. When you are, then you might come close to being able to take me.”

“Our males aren’t the only cocky ones.”

She winks. “Touché.”

Raven steps through first and I follow. I’ve traveled via portals for years, but trusting someone else, when you can’t see the other side, is a huge leap.

I step through to a big open room with a throne on one side. Raven grips the bracelet and closes the portal.

“Ignore the throne,” Raven says. “I do. It should be at the palace, but Ky likes it here where he can keep it safe. He gets so angry when I use it to store things. Like the other night, we had guests over and I had no place to put a bowl of mashed potatoes, so I sat it on the throne.” She starts laughing. “You should have seen the look on his face. He would have been happier if I’d killed someone.”

“Man, you’re weird.”

She rights herself, still smiling. “I embrace my weirdness. If you’ve seen all I have, you’d be weird, too.” She walks to the kitchen. “Do you want anything to drink? Eat?”

“No, I’m good.”

“Okay, then let’s sit and talk before Sol tries to force Ky to bring him here. I’m sure he isn’t happy we left, but Ky will reassure him.”

“Where is here exactly?”

“We’re not in the mortal realm but not in the fae realm either. We’re in the in-between. It’s a space between realms where Ky and I live. It’s quiet here and not many paranormals know about it, so we’re left alone a lot.”

“Don’t you have land to rule?”

“Yes, we rule North America, but we don’t have to be there all the time. In fact, we’re not there much. We’re hermits for the most part.”

“Doesn’t that get isolating? I’d think you’d be lonely.” I can’t imagine being cut off from everyone. It’s not like there’s a town here where they can walk down the road and grab a pizza. Or go hang out with friends.

“You’d think so, but once you’re mated, you realize your mate is the only one you’ll ever truly need.
